Three fenced in areas next to the Fort Wilkins Park Visitor Center and Store mark the location of the Pittsburgh and Boston Copper Harbor Mining Company shafts that were dug in 1844 after soldiers stationed at the fort discovered copper outside the gates. Unfortunately for the company's investors, by the time they had dug down 125 feet the copper had played out, resulting in far more money being sunk into the shafts than the amount of money earned by the copper coming out of them.
Today there is an interpretive sign near the shafts, the shafts being three holes in the ground, each surrounded by a sturdy wooden fence. No other trace of this early mine exists.
