Hunter's Bivouac
Near here General Hunter, on his retreat from Lynchburg, halted for the night of June 18, 1864. He resumed his retreat early in the morning of June 19.
Rising to Major General in the Union Army, David Hunter was charged by Grant to scorched earth tactics in central Virginia to permanently damage the railroad line. This campaign resulted in the burning of VMI and city of Lexington, but was stopped at the referenced Battle of Lynchburg - mostly by running out of ammo. (various sources)
Found in median on Hwy US 221 west of Bedford. No good shoulder for pull off.
