The last stand of old growth white pines in the state of Michigan. Over 600 years old and ranging from 130 to 150 feet in height, they are located in a rugged area that was saved from the loggers in the early 1970's through the combined efforts of many people.
The sanctuary is about 2.5 miles outside Copper Harbor, and as the directions state, follow the signs along the dirt roads to the parking area which is on Burma Road. Parking and a rustic outhouse are provided, as well as a well marked trail head.
Along the trail periodic signs show you where you are on the trail. A brochure is available at the trail head that gives more information about the sanctuary. Besides the magnificent white pines, which is Michigan's State Tree, and the wildlife, in the spring there are many rare fern species, precious orchids and other delicate woodland plants, while fall brings a bounty of mushrooms in many shapes and colors.
