Founded in 1896 as Suomi College, the name was changed in 2000 to Finlandia University. When founded its role was to preserve Finnish culture, train Lutheran ministers and teach English, but over the years that has evolved until today it no longer trains ministers and is now a liberal arts college, yet its Finnish heritage remain as seen in the Finnish American Heritage Center.
Located in what is known as Copper Country in Michigan's upper peninsula, Finlandia offers a small school atmosphere, real world educational opportunities, and a plethora of outstanding winter time recreational activities.
