Through efforts initiated by faculty at MSU Billings College of Technology, a piece of World Trade Center steel I-beam recovered from Ground Zero was awarded to the university on Feb. 11, 2011. Weighing over 600 pounds and measuring 6 feet long, the twisted I-beam is the centerpiece of a memorial at the MSU Billings’ west campus. Constructed just east of the entrance of the Health Sciences Building, the memorial will stand as a witness to the memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and in fighting the global war on terrorism during the following years. Visitors to the memorial can reflect not only on the historical significance of 9/11, but also on the sacrifices made by heroes -- the firefighters, first responders and service-oriented professionals -- who work in our communities on a daily basis. Built with the help of university and community volunteers and funded fully by community donations, the Memorial was dedicated on Sept. 11. 2011.
