Five kilometres or so south of the centre of the small north eastern Thai city of Mukdahan is a national park, and within this park a lookout point.
To reach this lookout one travels south along the main road, following the signs to the park. At the park entrance is a parking area, the actual lookout is associated with a Buddhist temple ~1km further up the hill. Entry is free, though if you visit the temple a small donation is the considered thing to do. The site is reachable at night, but take care with the broken footpaths, potholes and general impediments to safe walking.
From the lookout a view of the city of Mukdahan can be obtained, as well as a view of the Laos city, across the Mekong River, of Savannakhet. Both cities are capitals of their respective provinces, and are major trading partners. The two cities are linked by the Japanese funded 'Friendship Bridge 2', a little to the north.
