The hanging valley, which can potentially be draped with ribbons of fog, or dusted with snow, are an impressive sight in the distance. The valley immediately below, is blanketed with deep green pine trees.
The text on the interpretive signs here read:
"Hanging Valley
During the ice age, two great alpine glaciers met here. The Athabasca Glacier, being the larger, carved its valley some 100 metres deeper than Maligne Glacier carved its. You are standing on the lip of Maligne Valley, where it has been left hanging above Athabasca Valley.

"Maligne"
Wicked seems an unlikely description of this river, canyon and valley. But in 1846, Father de Smet, a traveling Belgian priest, had difficulty crossing the turbulent Maligne (pronounced Maleen) River where it enters the Athabasca. In frustration, he called it "une riviere maligne" or "wicked river"."
