This house is named both for its first owner and for it's most famous resident. Benjamin Chaffey, the local contractor who built the Court House, was the first owner. John McMullen, who purchased the house in 1856, was an Irishman who became one of Brockville's most prolific men of letters. He was involved in the publishing of two newspapers here. The Leeds Free Press and The Monitor. His best known book is the 1855 The History of Canada, which had gone into it's third edition by 1892. In recent history the building has divided up into two parts; one residential, the other a restaurant.
