Picture of one of a most important gates in Aurelian's walls, built around Rome in only five years (from 271 to 275), was a subject of stamp emitted in 1926. Interesting fact is that beside of its donomination 5 lires was the stamp subcharged with 2.5 lires, which was determined (as it is mentioned on the stamp) "Pro Opera Previdenza M.V.S.N.", i.e. for National Militia Fund - The Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (National Security Volunteer Militia) of the Italian Fascist movement - ill-famed Blackshirts. The motif that is used on the stamp is probably a copy of painting of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 – 1778). That is why some other subject on the stamps (mainly church of Santa Maria del Popolo at very right side of the stamp) differs on the picture from the reality.
The same stamps, but in different colors, were emitted in 1928 (red and grey) and 1930 (brown). They had a same denomination but different subcharge.
