Split off from Houghton County in 1861 when the majority of the copper mines were opening further south, Keweenaw County covers the northern part of the Keweenaw peninsula. Proud of its history and standing as the oldest courthouse in the state still used for its original purpose, the centennial time capsule will help the county celebrate its bi-centennial when opened in 2061.
