Four children and their mother holiday in the Lake District. The children are allowed to sail the lake in their boat the Swallow and set up camp on one of the islands. Their exploration of the island reveals that they are not the only children sailing in the lake, two girls are also sailing the lake in their boat the Amazon. Rivalry develops between the two boats, involving raids on each others bases and raids on the houseboat of the Amazon girls Uncle Jim. In the process the Swallows manage to find a trunk belonging to Uncle Jim that was stolen from his houseboat.
The Swallows pass the Stags Head Hotel on the way back from buying equipment at the boat chandlers.
