"Argent, a Monk habited unhooded Sable and shoed Gules passant." (Flags of the World)

This was the flag of the noble family of Münch. Maybe Münch is a form of Mönch (monk), but the etymology is not sure. The Münch acquired the village in the 13th century and built a castle there. The village - formerly called "Geckingen" - took over the name of the castle Münchenstein in the early 14th century. In 1515 the village became property of Basel. The flag was made the official flag of Münchenstein in 1946.

The picture shows a long form of the flag; the black and white tail is not a necessary part of the flag.
