This is the schoolhouse where, while reading the play Damon and Pythias by John Banim, the idea for the Knights of Pythias first came to Justus Rathbone. There are numerous exhibits related to the Knights of Pythius on display, plus a section of the schoolroom is set up as a period schoolroom of that time.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A plaque at the entrance reads:
THE PYTHIAN
SCHOOL HOUSE
Dedicated to
the memory of
JUSTUS HENRY RATHBONE
founder of the
Order Knights of Pythias
who taught school in
this building in 1860.
