Located just off Route 6A on Cape Cod this hatchery is used for public education as well as raising various species of trout and other freshwater fish.
The Sandwich Fish Hatchery is operated by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MDFW). The MDFW is the state agency responsible for protecting, managing and enhancing the states freshwater fisheries and wildlife resources. The State acquired the private Sandwich Trout Company's facility in Sandwich and East Sandwich in 1912. The fish hatchery was originally located at this site because of the artesian springs supplying cold, clean water from the Cape Cod aquifer.
Trout production in the early years of operation was concentrated on fingerling(two to four inch long)fish. Trout production now focuses on catchable sized fish ranging from one half pound to 1 1/2 pounds and larger.
Over 50,000 pounds of catchable rainbow, brook and brown trout are annually produced by this hatchery and stocked into ponds and rivers, primarily on Cape Cod and nearby areas.
Please note the hours of operation. 9am-3pm daily
