Nearby plaque which tells about the WPA in Michigan's Copper Country, has brief mention of this very unique WPA project was built in 1933-34. Constructed of stones and concrete with pipes and fittings for cannons, port hole, ventilators and smokestack, it also sports a rock drill machine gun on its bow.
The town was named by an early miner after the ship he served on during the American Civil War, and the boat has been given the same name. Kearsarge is small enough that the ship can not be missed. A small pull off area is located just north of the ship. The ship serves as part of the Kearsarge Veterans Memorial which honors local men who have served during the wars of the 20th and 21st century.
