Two fountains are located on either side of the entrance to the Main Branch of the New York City Public Library. They were designed and sculpted by Frederick William MacMonnies between 1914-1920. The fountain on the right side of the entrance is entitled "The Truth" and depicts a partially draped male figure seated on a sphinx. The inscription reads, 'BUT ABOVE ALL THINGS - TRUTH - BEARETH AWAY -THE VICTORY.' A search of the interent did not reveal the title for the fountain on the left which depicts a nude girl leaning against a horse (which may have wings?).
The artist, Macmonnies was born in Brooklyn in 1863 and died in New York City in 1937. He was also a prolific painter. He has over 300 works listed on the Smithsonian Inventory. Read more about him at (
