The Corps of Discovery sped down the Snake River, reaching its confluence with the Columbia River, on October 16, 1805. The Columbia Plateau was a parched, treeless landscape. Along the way they passed many native villages, but were unaware of the diversity of tribes in the area. The expedition camped with the leader of the Walla Wallas on the outbound and return treks.
