This 17th century chimney is all that is left of a cottage that is thought to have been the home of John Bunyan. The rest of the property was destroyed in 1877. It is not clear why the chimney was left intact.
It is in poor condition and held together with steel bracing.
Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress using features of the countryside of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. As a non-conformist preacher in a country which at that time, was somewhat intolerant, he found himself imprisoned for his efforts on a number of occasions. The Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into 200 languages and has never been out of print.
A couple of hundred yards away is a pub named after Bunyan with a picture of him and the chimney on it.
