Named after Connecticut's Revolutionary War-era governor, Jonathan Trumbull, Jonathan became UConn's mascot in 1934, after the University's name changed from Connecticut Agricultural College to Connecticut State College. Students voted overwhelmingly to accept the dog as the new mascot and a contest led to his naming.

This statue, by artist Larry Waisele, was dedicated in 1995. Students are known to rub its nose for good luck, though it is also common to see students climbing on top of the statue to "ride" it.
