You will either have to hunt for this little park or stumble upon it by accident as it is very well hidden away behind Toronto City Hall. When I first saw this sculpture in the park I wasn't sure what to make of it but after reading the plaque it made more sense...steel beams honouring a longtime union leader representing steelworkers.
"Larry Sefton Memorial
Location - northeast corner of Bay and Hagerman Streets, south of Dundas Street West.
Tucked into a small parkette behind City Hall is the Larry Sefton Memorial, donated by the United Steelworkers of America and dedicated to a longtime steelworkers’ union leader who passed away in 1973. Sefton spent 20 years in the steelworkers’ union and was a much-liked and respected figure. Prior to his time with the steelworkers, Sefton had figured prominently in a miners’ strike in northern Ontario.
Designed by Jerome Markson and installed in 1977, the memorial presents an arrangement of 16 vertical steel I-beams, arrayed on an upwards slope. The close spacing of the beams symbolizes workers’ unity and solidarity.
A nearby plaque commemorates Sefton’s life. A lecture series in Sefton’s name is an annual feature of the University of Toronto’s Woodsworth College Centre for Industrial Relations."
