Lake Missoula, the great Ice Age lake, was formed when a glacial ice dam blocked the Clark Fork River. When the ice dam broke, a torrent of flood waters escaped to the west and southwest. One of the flood routes was through this valley with the water about 1000 feet deep in this area. The power of the flood waters scoured away the softer rock and exposed the hard rock dike that controlled the level of the original Couer d'Alene and created the falls.
