Alvor is one of the three Parishes of the Municipality of Portimão (the others are Portimão and Mexilhoeira Grande).
The sign is placed at the border of Alvor and Portimão parishes.
Alvor is a small fisherman village (today the economy is mainly dedicated to tourism but fishing is still important). The sign shows the village seen from the river. On the bottom left we can see the old Lifeboat house (The house with triangular roof), an ex-libris of Alvor where a beautifull lifeboat can be seen. The house on the bottom (The one near the water)is the old fishmarket and on the top of the hill there´s the church.
On the water there´s the fish boats representing the origins of the village and bellow the water several fish species.
The sign is made of hand made tiles mounted on concrete.
The tiles were painted by the artist Gomes Nunes in 2001 (See big picture near the octopus).
