The Bytown Museum has been witness to various paranormal phenomena over the years. Many times, staff and visitors alike have been overwhelmed with the feeling of being watched and/or not being alone. Items have been known to be moved about and left in different locations, without any visible agency being responsible for it. On one occasion, the covers for all ten smoke detectors installed on the premises dropped to the floor in unison. At another time, an employee locking up for the night was unable to open the door to the second floor room she was in, and had the feeling that it was being pushed shut from the other side. It was only when her friends from downstairs ran up to see what was taking so long that the pushing stopped. During one amateur investigation, the investigator asked aloud, "Who is haunting this museum?", whereupon the screen of a nearby computer terminal began filling up with the words, "John By John By, John By", endlessly. The most common events are the sounds of footsteps going up and down the stairs when no one is there.
Public access?:
The Museum is located alongside the set of eight locks on the Rideau Canal between Parliament Hill and the Château Laurier
