The main idea behind this film is that Dr Watson (Ben Kingsley) is an author that is assisted by a Sherlock Holmes (Michael Caine) who is an actor. All the crimes are solved by Dr Watson and published, but Sherlock Holmes gets the credit. Unfortunately for Dr Watson the actor he has chosen for Sherlock Holmes has a penchant for drink and the ladies. Dr Watson decides to dispense with Holmes’ services, but unfortunately Scotland Yard will not let Dr Watson in on any more crime cases. In particular, the Bank of England has had its printing plates stolen and the government want Holmes on the case. To Dr Watson’s frustration he has to re-employ Sherlock Holmes.

The case of the stolen Bank of England Plates moves to the Lake District, where a chief suspect has travelled. A body is found and Holmes and Watson investigate. The body turns out to be a local boatman, not the thief. The action then returns to London, where Dr Watson is captured by Moriarty. Holmes has to find Watson, but is left literally without a clue. Eventually Holmes has a breakthrough when a five pond note is found at the docks and Holmes deduces, by a totally wrong route, that the note was produced at a theatre. Fortunately the deduction, though wrong, leads Holmes to the correct location where he rescues Dr Watson.

The clips in this waymark are taken along Derwent Hill in Portinscale. Holmes and Watson are driven by carriage from the station to their hotel (Fawe Park in reality). The street used is outside the hotel where the film crew stayed whilst shooting at nearby Fawe Park.
