The horizontal lines etched into the hillside are evidence that an enormous lake once filled the valley. These lines represent the ancient shorelines of Glacial Lake Missoula. The highest known shorelines are found at 4,200 feet. If Missoula Lake existed today the city of Missoula would be beneath 950 feet of water. The two mountains with the most pronounced strandlines in Missoula are Mt. Jumbo with the letter "L" and Mt. Sentinel with the letter "M". I took the photos from the parking lot of the Natural History Museum that had an exhibit on the Ice Age Floods.
