David Glasgow Farragut (1801-1870) was the first Admiral of the US Navy. His "'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!'" order was made at the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864 when his defeat of the Confederate naval forces led to the surrender by three Confederate forts. The Smithsonian Inventory (visit link) describes this monument thusly:

"Standing figure of Admiral Farragut on a center pedestal of an exedra. He is dressed in his naval uniform, binolculars held in his left hand and a sword hanging at his left side. The exedra terminates on either side in a carved dolphin. The exedra is covered in a relief depicting waves that symbolize Farragut's devotion to a life on the sea. The waves flow over an unsheathed sword and two seated female figures carved in relief on either side. The female figure on the right is Courage and the one on the left is Loyalty. On the back, along the top, are symbols of fire and the seaman's rope knot."

The artist, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), is an American sculptor known for his design of many Civil War monuments. Read more about him at (visit link)
