The Smithsonian Inventory (
visit link) describes this 1875 work by Randolph Rogers thusly:
"Figure of Seward seated in a chair with his proper right leg crossed over his proper left leg. In his proper right hand he hold a quill pen and in his proper left hand he holds a piece of paper. There are several books stacked under the chair."
Seward, was a US Senator from New York who also served as US Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He is probably most remembered for purchasing Alaska from Russia...a decision which was much ridiculed at the time. Read more about him at (
