"The Jayhawk Tower was originally known as the Hotel Jayhawk which was built in 1926. The hotel closed in the mid-1970s. In 1982, it was converted into an office building. At that point, the signs' lettering was changed from "Hotel" to "Tower". The two, identical rooftop signs are believed to be from 1926. The 35 foot tall Jayhawk signs were restored in 1999.
