The sign at the building reads:

"The CPR telegraph building is the only pre-World War II railway building left in Field.

CPR Telegraph Building Circa 1931

Railway operations and locals were not the only user of the telegraph station. During their 20-minute stopover in Field, railway passengers often dropped by to check for telegrams or send quick messages to people back home. For three decades the sound of dots and dashes filled this building. In 1961 the click of the telegraph machine was replaced by the blinking lights of a telephone switchboard. It operated here until 1979."

The Railway was the largest employer in Field until 1952 when the railroad switched from steam engines to more efficient diesel-electric engines, which reduced the required crew from 39 to 9.
