The plaque reads:
"NEAR THIS SPOT STOOD
THE NEW YORK WORLD BUILDING
WHOSE PUBLISHER
JOSEPH PULITZER
UPHELD THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS
OF AMERICAN JOURNALISM
AN IMMIGRANT
HE ROSE TO FAME AND FORTUNE
AND NEVER IN THE PROCESS
LOST THE COMMON TOUCH
1954"
Curiously, Wikipedia (
visit link) describes the New York World thusly:
"The New York World was a newspaper published in New York City from 1860 until 1931. The paper played a major role in the history of American newspapers. It was a leading national voice of the Democratic Party, and from 1883 to 1911 under publisher Joseph Pulitzer it became a pioneer in Yellow Journalism as it pushed its daily circulation to the one-million mark."
So, unless one considers Yellow Journalism to uphold the finest traditions in American journalism, there seems to be a disconnect here.
