Jacob's Ladder Hill was a steep and treacherous section of the road through the Berkshire Hills. When the Route 20 by-pass was built, in 1920, automobile clubs from all over the northeast brought stones from their hometowns and erected a celebratory roadside cairn.
The original dry-laid structure was moved from across the street in 1930. In 1946, it was moved, once again, to its present site and set with mortar. The newest stone is a granite plaque placed on September 25, 2010 commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Jacob's Ladder Trail - now U.S. Route 20.
