Located at Blata l’Bajda, on an island in the road from Floriana to Hamrun, the Spencer Monument is an obelisk in memory of the Hon Sir Robert Cavendish Spencer, the captain of HMS Madagascar.
He died in Malta on the 4th November 1830 whilst his ship was in quarantine and was the great-great uncle of Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997).
The monument was designed by the Maltese architect George Pullicino in 1831 and moved to its present position on top of Spencer Hill in 1893.
It was damaged by lightning in 1975 but has been fully repaired.
