Edmund Anthony Jefferson Maynard was born in 1861 in Chesterfield. Coming from a fairly wealthy family he went to Harrow and represented them at cricket, and later also played for Cambridge. After leaving university he went onto play cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1880 and 1887.

Outside of his cricket career he was also a Justice of the Peace for Derbyshire.

The family name has its roots going back to 1066 and William the Conqueror. The family originally was based in the South of England and at some point a branch of the family moved to Derbyshire.

In 2008 the hotel underwent a major refurbishment and the name was changed from The Maynard Arms to The Maynard. The downstairs windows near to the entrance also have the coat of arms etched into them.
