United States Navy Douglas F4D-1 Skyray was used by both the Navy and the Marines as a fighter airplane and for close support of troops.
The sign in front of the aircraft explains its history:
Douglas F4D-1 Skyray
1958
Inspired by German tailless designs of World War II, the
supersonic Skyray saw widespread service with the Navy
and marines, both as a fighter and close-support aircraft.
It set several world speed and climb records in the mid-
1950's and was the only Navy fighter to serve with the
North American Air Defence Command (NORAD). Powered
by Pratt & Whitney J57 with afterburner, 420 Skyrays
were produced, serving into the 1960's. This was the 107th
aircraft. |
