A crown is a common subject for a pub sign, since it was easy to paint and recognise.

This sign is rather awkwardly placed behind a text only sign.

This sign has been used for over 600 years. It suffered something of a decline during Cromwell's Commonwealth years but rose again during the Restoration of the monarchy. The Crown was popular, in part because of it's royal reference and but had the advantage of not being too specific by naming either the monarch OR the gender.

As pub signs have become more sophisticated, the image has departed from the original simple form. This one however, looks rather plain.
