Though the building was built in 1872. The church parish dates back farther in 1855.

The building formerly had a large spire, unfortunately this was removed after an earthquake in 1998.

In recent years the church played host to several local musicians.

The church was declared unsafe in 2009 after pieces of the roof began falling.
