This is a Grade II listed building at 21 Market Square. Built in the C18th it has a stucco facade with eaves cornice and tiled roof. Of three storeys and three bays, the two windows at each level are in moulded architraves and have sashes without glazing bars. The doorway has a moulded architrave and cornice. The 'back' has a wooden verandah slightly raised from the ground floor level. Massive wooden pillars support the roof.
One of the Market Place pubs, it's run jointly with the White Swan - this is the public to the Swan's lounge. It is a lively place especially at weekends. Once known as The Anatomical Horse many decades ago, the bar area is low-ceilinged with Marston's beers on sale. Sometimes a bit of a struggle to place your order due to the noise when the bar is packed.
The sign is a 'self-portrait' showing times past when ale was delivered by dray.
