On the base of the granite plinth is an inscription that reads: "Pethick Bros / Contractors / Plymouth". Research shows that the Pethick brothers were grandsons of Richard Pethick who was manager of Dartmoor Granite Works. They brothers were: Mr John Richard Pethick, Mr Arthur Henry Pethick, Mr Benjamin Herbert Pethick (an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects) and Mr Nicholas Frank Pethick.
The brothers were more builders than quarry men but it is highly likely that they used local granite as it was what their family were used to. The brothers also owned Swell Tor Quarry from which they probably extracted most of the materials they worked with.
