The master of Porterhouse College has died without naming his successor, as tradition requires. Sir Godber Evans is appointed as master and sets about reforming the college, to the dismay and opposition of the Fellows and Skullion, the head porter.

Things take a turn for the worse due to the activities of a research student, Lionel Zipser. Mr Zipser is, to say the least, repressed and comes under the clutches of his bedder, Mrs Biggs. The chaplain advises Zipser to pick up a foreign language student rather than fall prey to Mrs Biggs. Zipser visits several public houses in search of condoms and wakes up in his room later, the worse for drink, and with two gross of condoms. In a panic he decides to float the condoms up the chimney using gas from the fire. Unfortunately, the condoms start a fire in the Bull Tower and litter the quadrangle. Skullion, fearing for the good name of the college does not allow fire crews in to college. Sir Godber sacks Skullion for his actions.

Skullion appeals to Sir Godber to reconsider, offering shares that he was given by a previous master to the college. Sir Godber refuses but falls over fatally banging his head. Two fellows find Sir Godber dying and hear his last words, “Skullion.” The academics take the traditional view that Skullion should be made master. Unfortunately, on hearing the news Skullion has a heart attack, known as a Porterhouse Blue. Skullion goes on to be the new master, albeit briefly. The shares he gave to the college prove to exceed the value of re-building the Bull Tower and the college is restored to its traditions.

The clip in this waymark is the scene where two fellows arrive at the home of Sir Cathcart D’Eath, a college benefactor, to plead for his intervention with Sir Godber. The house is, in reality, Knebworth House.
