The origins of this eccentric film start with its creator, Vivian Stanshall. In 1970 Stanshall stood in for John Peel on Radio 1 whilst Peel was on holiday. During this time Stanshall introduced his listeners to Sir Henry Rawlinson and his eccentric relatives. The characters were introduced via music and comedy sketches. Eventually, in 1978, Stanshall brought the sketches and music together on an LP – Sir Henry at Rawlinson’s End. Two years later the story became a film, starring Trevor Howard.

The plot of the film revolves around Sir Henry attempting to exorcise the ghost of his brother, Humbert, who died accidentally in a drunken duck shooting incident. Whilst the plot is difficult to follow, the film attained cult status, relying on puns, double-entendres, pop-cultural references and clever wordplay.

The clip for this waymark concerns the shooting down of a hang glider by Sir Henry, as it passes over Rawlinson’s End.
