The detective Philip Marlowe is asked by General Sternwood, a man near death, to investigate the blackmail attempt on one of his daughters. Marlowe suspects that the real meaning to the General’s investigation is to find out what happened to his other daughter’s husband, Rusty Reagan.
Through several murders and drug dealing episodes, Marlowe persists in his investigations. Eventually he discovers that the youngest of the General’s daughters is mentally disturbed and that she killed Rusty Reagan at a ruined building on the estate.
The General’s residence on film is, in reality Knebworth House. The clips in this waymark show Marlowe, played by Robert Mitchum, talking with the butler in the grounds of the house.
