This marker is located on a boulder, like most of the others in this Park...and reads:
"In 1832, when our first settlers arrived, the
Deep Waterway at this site was a small river
full of islands. They crossed it 'by ford or
makeshift ferry'. In 1837 the village issued
$3000 in script to build two bridges. After the
bridges washed down the river during the
spring rains of '38, a $75 'dug out' was used
for public ferrying. By 1840 they had a sturdy
oak bridge; about 1859 a quaint two arch stone
bridge, then in 1870 one with 5 arches. In 1900
the first steel bridges were erected, followed in
1933 by the present 2 span lift bridges.
