Situated on the north coast of Madeira about 36 km from Funchal lies the municipality of Santana, between the rugged central mountains and the northern sea.
The city of Santana is a charming place where we can still find traditional triangular thatched houses.
These are traditional homes with bungalow rooftops that are made out of straw that extend down to the ground, making them triangular in shape. They are mainly rural houses, used by farmers in the past. These houses have white walls with red doors and windows and blue
trim.
Originally, these houses were composed of an attic, where agricultural products were stored, and a ground floor, usually the housing area divided into two parts, a kitchen and a room.
It is believed that these houses are remnants of primitive constructions, made of wood and thatch, and they were all over the island. Because there, in the region, little stiff and stone cold in the winter climate is adopted to this raw material, allowing also an adaptation to the seasons, cool in summer and warm in winter.
Most of these houses are now tourist attractions. The straw roofs are renovated every four to five years.
