The plaque reads:

By Robert Mangold
Untitled
Donated by the Park People 1975

Robert Mangold studied architecture and 3-dimensional design at Indiana University at Bloomington. Mangold has been an artist since the early 1960s, and is recognized for his kinetic constructivist approach to sculpture. He is sometimes linked with the kinetic sculptor George Rickey, who taught at Indiana University in the early 1950's, when Mangold was an undergraduate there. In 1960, Mangold moved to Colorado to teach sculpture at Metropolitan State College until retirement, and he has continued to reside in that state. A retrospective of this artist’s work was held last year at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver. He has recently been given one-person shows at Colorado’s Loveland Museum, Houston Sculpture 2000, and at many galleries in the West. Mangold also participated in Pier Walk exhibitions held annually at Chicago’s Navy Pier, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, CO, the Ellen Noel Museum in Texas, and at sculpture parks and gardens in Hamilton, OH; Chicago, IL; and LaQuinta, CA, to give a few examples of group exhibitions. Public collections in which Mangold is represented include those that belong to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Dallas Museum of Art, TX; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. Mangold currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the International Sculpture Center and the Alliance for Contemporary Art of the Denver Art Museum, as well as for other art organizations.

The sculpture is titled "Trees or "Untitled". When the wind blows across the pipes, and eerie sound of various tones is emitted. It was dedicated in 1975. The sculpture is made of steel on a concrete foundation. The sculpture is approx. 16 x 22 x 1 ft. The sculpture is two sets of two separate abstract tree forms. The sculptures are made of steel pipes of various diameters, welded vertically and attached laterally to a center trunk of a thicker pipe. All of the pipes are cut at 45 degree angles. The sculptures were commissioned and placed as part of a larger Art in the City $255,000 capital improvement project in Denver. The sculptures were funded by the City, with a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. (IAS files contain news clipping from Rocky Mountain News April 21, 1974, pg. 17; and related material from the Art in City Project. Link)
