The rectangular plaque, that appears to be made from grey slate, has the inscription: "Arthur Onslow / (1691-1768) / Speaker of the House / of Commons from 1728 / to 1761 lived in a house / on this site". Along the bottom edge of the plaque is "L.C.C." and "1926".

Arthur Onslow was born in 1691 in Chelsea. He attended Wadham College, but took no degree whilst there. He was called to The Bar at the Middle Temple, in 1713, later became recorder of Guildford, and High Steward of Kingston-on-Thames. Although returned as Member of Parliament for Guildford and for Surrey in 1727, he chose to represent Surrey only. He represesnted the county until the dissolution of the house in March 1761. At the opening of Parliament in 1728, he was elected Speaker of the House, and was re-elected in 1735, 1741, 1747, and 1754. He served for more than a total of thirty years, and served in five succesive Parliaments. His son was the first Earl of Onslow.
