The Bear Gulch Ski Basin Viewpoint has a history sign about this former ski area which originally opened in 1940. There is also a Mesa Falls Scenic Byway sign describing points of interest along the byway. For more information on the former ski area check here: (

The 27 mile long Mesa Falls Scenic Byway begins at Ashton, Idaho on U.S. Hwy. 20 and follows Idaho Hwy. 47 northeasterly to the Bear Gulch area where the Idaho Hwy. 47 becomes F.S. Route 294 which trends northwesterly until it rejoins U.S. Hwy. 20 near Island Park. The main attractions of the route are Upper and Lower Mesa Falls.
