The original grist mill was built in 1812 and the town of Volant grew up around it. The resulting settlement was called Lockeville, but by 1893 the name became Volant. The millrace emanates from Neshannock Creek. Today the mill serves as the hub for the busy tourist town. It was rescued from destruction just in the nick of time in 1985 when a local businessman bought it.
