Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 – 1882) was an Italian revolutionary whose history runs along similar lines to that of the much later Che Guevara. Garibaldi was born in Italy but fought in Brazil and Uruguay before returning home and being elected to the Italian parliament. Garibaldi died in his bed at home.
The biscuit.
There is no doubt that the Garibaldi biscuit, well known in this country was named after Giuseppe. It is said that Garibaldi, whilst visiting Leeds in 1861, was offered the English treat, an Eccles cake. However, before eating his cake he needed to answer the call of nature and left his cake unattended. Upon his return, Garibaldi had forgotten where he had left his cake. He sat himself on a nearby chair, where he crushed the Eccles cake, thus creating the Garibaldi biscuit. Hitchin Lookers find this account highly attractive but unlikely.
