Scott Carpenter, one of the original 1959 Mercury Seven astronauts, was born and raised in Boulder. This pool in
Scott Carpenter Park was named after him in 1963. The pool features:
- Six lane 50 meter pool with temperatures between 80° and 82°
- Two one-meter spring boards operated during open swim hours
- A large slide operated during open swim hours
From the History of Scott Carpenter Park:
In 1962 voters approved a bond to build Scott Carpenter swimming pool.
It was dedicated on May 30, 1963 by Scott Carpenter himself. After his dedication speech, Carpenter was thrown into the pool, fully clothed, by Mayor Holloway and City Manager Robert Turner.
They in turn were pushed in by Chamber of Commerce officials, proving that City of Boulder officials are indeed capable of having a sense of humor!
In the three months preceding the 2011 opening, the pool underwent a massive tear-down, re-build and re-finishing. Major improvements to the pool have included:
- Re-aligned all lanes to 50M standard
- Installed stainless steel gutters
- Removed and re-poured most side walls
- Improved ADA accessibility
- Installed new surge-tank, energy-efficient boiler and
circulation pump
- Replaced deck drains
- Re-finished the water slide and pool interior
