A imagem da República foi adoptada como símbolo da República Portuguesa, na sequência da implantação do novo regime, a 5 de Outubro de 1910. A imagem da República Portuguesa foi representada de várias formas, seguindo o modelo genérico da Liberdade de Eugéne Delacroix, individualizando-se, apenas, pelas cores vermelha e verde das suas roupas (cores da nova Bandeira Nacional). A partir de 1912 o busto da República, esculpido por Simões de Almeida, torna-se o padrão oficial da imagem da República Portuguesa sendo usado como efígie nas moedas de escudo e de centavos e colocado nas repartições públicas.

O busto da República passou a ser considerado um dos símbolos nacionais de Portugal, a par do retrato oficial do Presidente da República, do brasão de armas, da bandeira e do hino. Tornou-se obrigatória a existência de uma reprodução do busto da República, em local de destaque, em todos os edifícios públicos.

Entretanto, ao contrário do que aconteceu com os restantes símbolos nacionais, o uso da imagem da República foi caindo em desuso, sendo, hoje, raro.

The Portuguese Efígie da República is represented as a young woman wearing the phrygian cap, modeled after the Liberty of Eugène Delacroix' Liberty Leading the People. As a national distinction, the Portuguese Republic is represented wearing green and red clothes.

The Efígie da República was adopted as a Portuguese State official symbol after the 5 October 1910 revolution, when the Republic substituted the Monarchy in Portugal. Before that, it was used as a political symbol by the Portuguese republicans. Later, the sculpture of Simões de Almeida, representing the Bust of the Republic became the standard for official use. A reproduction of the Bust of the Republic had to be present, in prominence, in all public buildings and was also present, as an effigy, in the escudo coins. It was considered, by the new republican regime, as a national symbol of Portugal, like the national coat of arms or the national flag.
It became obligatory to have a reproduction of the bust of the Republic, in a prominent place in all public buildings.
However, unlike what happened with the other national symbols, the use of the image of the Republic was falling into disuse and is now rare.
